Empowering Communities Through Increased Minority Participation in Construction

The Watson-Batts School of Construction is leading the charge in tackling the construction industry’s hidden crisis by empowering minority participation in construction projects. With a focus on improving opportunities, removing barriers, and establishing generational wealth in historically disadvantaged communities, Watson-Batts School of Construction is revolutionizing the way projects are bid and awarded.

The construction industry is facing a critical shortage of bidders, exacerbated by the mass retirement of Baby Boomers and a surge in project funding. This imbalance has led to increased project costs and a lack of competition, posing challenges for project owners and stakeholders alike.

At the Watson-Batts School of Construction, we believe that diversity is key to a thriving construction industry. Our outreach and engagement services aim to connect project owners with Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) certified and minority contractors and subcontractors, revitalizing the bidding landscape and driving down costs.

One of our primary strategies is the implementation of contractor outreach meetings, strategically held around the 80 percent design level of a project. These meetings serve as a platform to inform the construction community about upcoming projects and the benefits of engaging with WBSC. These sessions are designed to foster relationships, encourage collaboration, and ensure that all stakeholders have access to the resources and support necessary for successful project completion.

By championing increased minority participation, WBSC is not just addressing industry challenges but also contributing to a more equitable and inclusive economic landscape. Our dedication to this cause is unwavering, as we continue to innovate and advocate for a construction sector that truly represents the diversity of our society.
